all greek to me

guess the reason for the title.

today i had to do a presentation.  it was fairly short.  my discussion group had 5 minutes and we split it into two parts.  i did the introduction and then neil, who is from the UK but working in singapore, did the second half.  it was alright.  think someone took photos but i don't have it yet.

this is a view of schwab residential center from where our classrooms are.

during break in-between lectures, we come out to an open space where they have fruit, coffee and drinks.  i usually grab a banana and a bottle of juice and some water.

today instead of chatting, i decided to take a walk and came across this plaque on the ground.  to save you the trouble of straining your eyes and neck (i can't figure out how to rotate the picture here), the inscription here is from philip knight, who donated the money to build the knight management center, the place we have our classes.  he also happens to be the founder of nike, and that's why there is what looks like a running track around his words.

"There comes a time in every life when the past recedes and the future opens.  It's that moment you turn to face the unknown.  Some will turn back to what they already know.  Some will walk straight ahead into uncertainty.  I can't tell you which one is right.  But I can tell you which one is more fun."

during break, some stay in class to do some reading or clear emails.

ok this picture may not show clearly what it is but i will describe what i had for lunch.  there's the normal green salad, and also grilled vegetables.  there's vegetable lasagna, roast beef and roast chicken.  and most curiously, something called dirty rice.  don't know what it is but it was delicious.  desert was fruit and some brownie that was really good.  almost every day i sit next to new faces and it is interesting to hear where they are from, but i think after a while, people will naturally gravitate towards those they prefer to converse with.

coincidentally, someone from the company that i did a presentation on in the morning, came to give us a talk in the afternoon.  this is at the auditorium.  i did not sleep well last night, and dozed off during this lecture.  but i only missed a bit.

after class, my discussion group went out to downtown palo alto for dinner at a nice little greek restaurant called evvia.  it was easily one of the most crowded restaurants in that whole area.  this is a picture of the starters we had which included fried cheese, calamari and some bread with cheese.

this is another nice salad and cheese appetizer.  for the main course, i took a dish called mousaka.  it has lamb in it.  sort of like greek lasagna.  this is what it looks like (below).

this is dessert.  warm chocolate cake and some other pastry with pistachio ice cream.  really good.  anyway, since we were going out, we had decided that we would do some work after dinner, either in the restaurant or at starbucks.  restaurant was noisy and not conducive - we were all sitting on bar stools squeezed into a corner.  no one was giving up their space - almost everyone who was alone had a laptop in front of him or her.  so we walked along the street to look for a place and finally found one.  below are pictures of the members of my discussion group.
