tahoe day 3 - the hike to angora lakes

our last day in tahoe and since we had some spare time before we needed to head back, we decided to do one more hike and found probably the prettiest spot in tahoe.  we only had time for a short hike and decided to head to angora lakes.  why lakes?  there are two of them sort of connected together.  here i am, still holding my chai tea latte from starbucks.  if you guys remember, i called you on skype using my ipad while we were at starbucks.  they had a free wifi connection.  the connection at cedar pines didn't work so we used such hotspots (the other one was at mcdonalds).

the first angora lake (below) in panoramic view.  isn't it beautiful?  there were a few houses around the lake.

and i happened to catch a duck swimming nonchalantly across the lake.

and then we followed the trail on and thought we were running into someone's backyard.  but we walked up a little flight of stairs and then saw this charming little sign.

we went in to try the lemonade and spoke to the lady who ran the place.  it turns out that she's the grand-daughter of the man who built angora lakes resort back in 1917.  what a feat that must have been - hauling the materials up over the rough terrain, without modern equipment, and only having a few months of the year in which to work.  she told us that in winter, the resort would be snowed under 7 to 8 feet of snow!  the resort is only open from may to september.  there are 8 chalets, which are rented by the week for about $1300 a week.  and there's a waiting list.

this was even prettier than the first lake.  turns out the houses in the first lake are all owner-occupied.  there are only 8 chalets here, and the owner has no plans to increase the number.  she is quite happy to keep it exclusive.  she rents out boats and kayaks - i guess it is something to do, even though the lake isn't very big and you can't go very far.  i think it would be a really nice place if you want some time to get away from it all.

and there's a nice little waterfall you can see here.

and so it was time to leave tahoe.  but before that, we made a stop at jelly belly!  i told them about the tour and that it was actually quite interesting because of the amount of work that went into making the humble jelly belly bean.  but we had not factored in the fact that it was the summer holidays...

we were told that every 15 minutes they would let in about 60 people (though that seems a rather large estimate) to me.  and we estimated that it would take almost an hour if we were to get in the line.  so we settled for buying some beans at the shop and went on our way.

lunch was at a ramen place in san mateo.  i think it is in the same area as the chinese restaurant that uncle jerry and aunt karen brought us to on both occasions that we visited them.  what was it called?  i can't remember.

this restaurant was a place that ps used to go to when he lived in san francisco more than 5 years ago.  he couldn't quite remember the name nor the address and we spent a while looking for it.  we finally found it and got in at 1.50 pm, just before their closing time at 2.  the ramen was really good, though i thought the quail egg was a little overcooked.  i added extra pork and quail eggs.  we were famished and really wolfed it down.
