whole foods market

uncle jerry dropped alison off at her abacus class at 10 and we then went to this place called whole foods market.  he dropped me off and arranged to pick me up later.

our favourite store was next door, so i popped over before heading back.

no i did not buy ice cream:)  got some itunes cards for myself and you guys.  and some dvds on sale.  then walked back to the whole foods place.  and on the way,  i saw this.

we liked the coffee from last time, so i bought a pound of the most popular blend called major dickason.  no idea who he is.  and i got a free cup of coffee too!

back to whole foods, and lots of stuff that we don't get back home.  at least i think we don't - haven't seen them before.  the place was really crowded - maybe also because it was a weekend.  lots of people buying lunch too.  they have cooked food.  saw something that looked like a curry puff.  it's a mexican dish called empanada.

of course, we have fruits back home:)  just took these pics to show the inside of the store.  a lot of the things are not cheap, especially the organic stuff.  even ben and jerry's cost $5.69 a tub.  which is still cheaper than back home, but i am waiting for the sale like the last time!  or maybe there are no sales for ice cream in summer?

these are whole sardines.  we normally get them only in the can back home.  anyway, uncle jerry says the variety of fish is something he misses from back home.  i was of course puzzled since california is on the pacific coast and so fish should be plentiful.  he says there are not many types of small whole fish.  so what they normally buy are fillets of the big fish.  i wondered if there were people who farmed fish, and if there would be enough demand for it - like in singapore where we get farmed salmon which makes it cheaper.  but apparently, farmed fish does not taste as good.  he said farmed salmon was oilier than wild salmon.  wild salmon is also leaner but costs three times as much.

lots of stuff you can buy by weight, including nuts, dried fruit, chocolates, even breakfast cereals!  i will come back here just before coming home.  not for the cereals of course:)

look what i found!  this is pretty expensive but then again, you don't get coconuts in california.  why would anyone buy it without the pulp?:)

do we have this back home?  i don't remember so i bought a pack.  if it's good i might bring a pack back.
